U.K. far-right militants lose lawsuit in Syrian pupil defamation case | Islamophobia News

After the judge ruled that Tommy Robinson slandered the Syrian boy, he ordered him to pay Jamal Hijazi £100,000 (US$138,000).

On Thursday, the judge ruled that British far-right Tommy Robinson (Tommy Robinson) slandered a Syrian boy and ordered him to pay a Syrian boy 100,000 pounds ($138,000) in damages.

18-year-old Jamal Hijazi was attacked in the playground of Almondbury Community School in Huddersfield, northern England, in October 2018.

Soon after the video of the incident went viral on the Internet, Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), claimed in two Facebook videos that Hijazi himself had “attacked the young British girl in his school” Perpetrators of violence.

In a video watched by nearly 1 million people, the 38-year-old Robinson also claimed that Hijazi “beat a black girl” and “threatened to stab” another boy in his school. The court rejected the allegations on Thursday.

Robinson, who represents himself, insists that his comments are generally true, saying that he has “discovered dozens of offensive, abusive and deceptive behaviors by Hijazi.”

But High Court Judge Matthew Nicklin stated that Robinson failed to prove his allegations and made a ruling in favor of Hijaz, awarded him £100,000 (US$137,000) in damages, and ordered Robinson to pay what PA News Agency believes to be more than £500,000. Cost (689,000 USD).

Serious impact

Hijazi’s lawyer Catrin Evans said that these comments led to death threats to her client.

Nicklin said: “The defendant took the responsibility to prove the truth of his allegations. He failed. In fact, for reasons I have explained, his evidence was seriously insufficient. However, he insisted on the serious allegations he made initially, even in the lawsuit. These allegations were added in the process.”

“The claimant had to face them in the full glare and propaganda of the High Court trial. I have a responsibility to make it clear that the defendant failed to defend the truth, failed to defend the plaintiff and awarded him a fair compensation for damages.”

Another member of the Hijazi legal team welcomed this decision and considered it a proof.

Francesca Vlad said: “Our client Jamal Hijaz takes a lot of courage to take a slanderous action against a famous far-right and anti-Islamic activist like Stephen Yaxley Lennon.”

“Jamaal and his family now want to leave this thing behind so that they can continue to live. However, they do want to express their gratitude to the great British public for their support and generosity. Without them, it would be impossible to adopt Legal action,” she added.

Nicklin said that these videos had “particularly serious” consequences for Hijazi.

“The defendant’s accusation against the plaintiff is very serious and has been widely announced,” he said.
